What is fragile masculinity?

Fragile masculinity refers to the belief that men must exhibit traditional masculine traits such as strength, dominance, and emotional toughness to be considered manly. Men who do not conform to these beliefs are seen as weak, feminine, or gay. This mindset is often rooted in patriarchal systems and perpetuated by societal expectations and messages from media and popular culture. Men who subscribe to fragile masculinity are often defensive, dismissive, and even hostile when their masculinity is challenged or questioned. This can make it difficult for them to accept change or embrace more diverse and inclusive attitudes towards gender. Fragile masculinity can have negative impacts on men's mental health, relationships, and overall well-being, as it places immense pressure on them to conform to an unrealistic and rigid standard of masculinity.
